What’s Health Got to Do with It? Building Grassroots Capacity to Engage Local Healthcare Institutions in Community Development

Location: Potomac Ballroom
Date: Mon, April 15
Time: 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Organizer: Community Catalyst

Across the country, many healthcare institutions are expressing interest in supporting community efforts that address issues like housing, food security, and environmental health. However, concrete partnerships and investments in initiatives that address the “social and economic determinants of health” (SDH) are still uncharted territory for many health systems. Many well-intentioned efforts may veer off-course if they fail to engage community partners and impacted residents. In this session, speakers will share how and why they are grounding their work on SDH issues in grassroots organizing and leadership development. Using stories and examples from their own work, our speakers will discuss how community development and health advocates can 1) use the SDH framework to build community capacity, vision, and action for place-making and policy change; and 2) encourage healthcare institutions to bridge the divide that often exists between their institutional priorities and the priorities of the communities they serve.
